Twitter Custom Timelines could be a useful way to curate tweets on a specific topic or to document a conversation. They work in a similar way to Storify.
The big difference is that you can only collate tweets (obviously) and that they are displayed in chronological order. For this reason they aren’t quite as good at collating Twitter chats but they are a good way of pulling together the best moments from a a chat.
Here’s how to set them up:
Other uses for Custom Timelines
- Save tweets that are complimentary to share as customer testimonials.
- To collate the best tweets from a conference or a social media event.
- To keep a record of special offers you may wish to access later.
- To bookmark good links.
I have to admit that I’d been putting off using custom timelines as they required me to use TweetDeck. As a Hootsuite girl I had been resisting. I was pleasantly surprised to see how quick and easy it was to get started with TweetDeck now. I think I will use it from time to time to collate Custom Timelines.
Have you used Custom Timelines? Would you be put off by having to use TweetDeck? I’d love to hear your thoughts. Do leave me a link to any Custom Timelines you want to show off too.

I may have to start using Tweetdeck again! I stopped using it as it kept crashing my computer and now I love hootsuite. It is certainly a handy way to pull out the best tweets from a conference or tweetchat although time consuming if there’s a lot but I like the way it would get rid of all the ‘hello’ type tweets. Good idea re testimonials too – this is something I should do for my book as I do get occasional people tweeting me to tell me how much they enjoyed it.
I never quite got the hang of Tweetdeck so like you Amanda, became a hootsuite girl but on the whole I tend to use the Twitter app itself for all my mobile devices. I may have a look at it again now though as curious about their testimonial threads given I use the twitter one on my website.
I’m not a convert, I’ll defo be using it for timelines though. I know we both use favourites currently for testimonials. Using timelines could free up favourites for other things 🙂
Noo don’t leave hootsuite! I still prefer it. TweetDeck is good for this purpose though.
Yes, that’s what I was thinking, it would be handy to have twitter favourites back in action again sometimes.
I love and use Tweetdeck all of the time. Never noticed this feature. Great info and video. Thanks!
Thanks Sabrina, I’m delighted you found it useful 🙂
You lost me at “open a Tweetdeck” account. not that there’s anything wrong with Tweetdeck per se, but if twitter is only making it available through that platform I’m leery of investing time and energy into just one function.
I was the same but was surprised to see that it took less than a minute to get started onTweet Deck. That was probably the reason I hadn’t tried them up until now.
