This is part 3 of our series on Google Reader – a truely wonderful social media tool. This time we look at how you can monitor mentions of your brand, business, or industry online.
Knowing what other people are saying about you and your industry is massively important. You can identify problems, measure how far your message is spreading and find inspiration for blog and social media content from industry trends.
Bringing all these mentions into one place makes it easy to scan through results for relevant stuff and this is one of the reasons Google Reader is such a good tool for monitoring for free. We show you Advanced Twitter Search and Social Mention in our tutorial but for a full list of the best free social media monitoring tools click here.
In part one we showed you how to set up and how to bring your favorite blog feeds into Google Reader
In part two we showed you how to bring Google alerts into your Googler Reader
Hi great blog and podcasts. I have been watching your tutorilas on google reader. It is exactly what I’ve been looking for interms of getting the business mentions all onto one easy to view platform. Now I have set it up and it is giving me any new mentions. Is there a way of getting all the info. I have been monetoring over the past 6months onto google reader. I set up a google alerts there a few months back and would like to get them out of my inbox and into google reader. Also any twitter mentions we have had over past few months. Do you know if this is possible?
For existing Google alert log into Google, go to http://www.google.com/alerts and click ‘click here to manage alerts’. Click ‘edit’ next to the alert you want to send to reader. Under ‘deliver to’ choose ‘feed’ from the drop down menu.
I’m not sure it will bring old alerts in but it will convert existing alerts. The same for Twitter.
However I wouldn’t rely on Google Reader to store this information forever. For brand mentions I would save links somewhere else too.
