Is Facebook about to leave Europe?

You’ve seen the headlines. Meta could leave Europe if there isn’t a change in the data processing rules around GDPR. But are those headlines true?

Meta says no, it’s not. They have an obligation to shareholders to tell them about any potential threats to profits and data privacy is an issue. When GDPR was initially implemented there was a protection called ‘Privacy Shield’. It allowed international companies like Facebook to transfer data to their overseas offices. But Privacy Shield was invalidated. Facebook does transfer data from Europe to the US so this is a problem for them.

But not just Facebook, it’s a problem for many internet companies large and small. If they comply it makes it extremely difficult to keep doing business in Europe. Meta is currently waiting for a decision on this and expects it to arrive in early 2022.

Meta Is Absolutely Not Threatening to Leave Europe

DM from a Tweet

Twitter is testing allowing users to start a private direct message conversation from a Tweet. Just like you can on Facebook and Instagram, you’ll be able to click a button under a tweet to send a direct message.

This tool has been a helpful way to work with chatbots on Facebook and Instagram, could this mean more bot integration on Twitter in the future?

Instagram updates 2FA

Two-factor authentication is an important way of keeping hackers from your online accounts. But if you manage social media for other businesses it’s also a pain. It usually requires you getting a code sent to your client and then waiting for them to send it to you.

Instagram made a bunch of changes to its security and one change means that if you manage 2FA from an authenticator app (Like Google Authenticator) you’ll now be able to allow multiple people to access your account. No more waiting for the client to send you the number, you can get straight in.

Mascots for marketing on TikTok

Is a brand mascot the new must-have for business? Website Marketing Brew has noticed a trend on TikTok that shows mascots are performing extremely well. Brands using them are seeing larger follower counts and more views.

The article showcases the Duo Lingo mascot which has resulted in videos going from tens of thousands of views to millions.

You don’t always have to get a foam suit. The Empire State Building is seeing great results by transposing a mouth and eyes onto a photo of the building.

Could this be the way even smaller businesses could break TikTok? Or are the faces of business owners enough?

Speed up video tweets

There is just so much content to consume and so little time. And when that content is video or audio it requires our full attention. How can we save time?

It looks like Twitter is taking a leaf out of many podcast players books and offering a speed option for replay. You can speed up playback of audio tweets and videos up to 2x or slow it down to 0.25 of the original speed.

In 2x, 1x, 0.5x…now testing more options in playback speed for videos.

Some of you on Android and web will have different sets of playback speeds to choose from so you can slow down or speed up videos and voice Tweets. pic.twitter.com/OfGPf4F6Og

Safety mode on Twitter

Could switching off the negative comments make it easier to deal with them? Twitter is trying to find out.

If you’ve ever been the victim of a pile on Twitter you’ll know that it can get in the way of your whole life, business and personal. It could even prevent you from doing your job or marketing your business effectively.

Twitter is rolling out a way to remove yourself from intense situations by toggling on what they are calling ‘Safety Mode’ this will temporarily stop ‘spammy comments’. What spammy comments are is yet to be defined but from their video it looks like it’s designed to stop bullying tweets from reaching their victims.

Room chat on Clubhouse

The problem with Clubhouse has been that it does just one thing, it’s a live audio chat platform. This makes it harder to build relationships outside the chat. Previously people have made connections with fellow Clubhouse members on social networks outside the app.

But a new Room Chat feature looks as if you’ll be able to have a direct message chat alongside your clubhouse room. This feature has been discovered by reverse hacker Alessandro Paluzzi so we’re not quite sure how it will be used. It could be great for speakers and room hosts to manage the behind the scenes of a chat as well as for relationship building.
