IGTV is different. It’s not just a pre-recorded version of Instagram live. If you want to hold your viewer’s attention for longer, you will need to edit.
Nooo! I can hear you scream. Editing is tough! And you’re right, it can be. That’s why I’m going to share with you some of the simplest to use vertical video editing tools you can use right on your smartphone.
Plus, I’ve added some additional tools you can use to make outstanding vertical videos for IGTV.

But why bother editing?
Live video is great. You can just hit that button and broadcast. Because it’s live, when you fluff a line or make a mistake your audience are forgiving.
It’s easy to engage and interact with you while you are live and it’s that interaction that makes your viewers feel they are part of the broadcast, it keeps them watching.
IGTV is different. It’s Instagram’s version of YouTube. You can’t just do what you do on Live, you need to get creative if you want people to keep watching. You need to cut out the mistakes and produce a polished product.
That’s where editing comes in.
Mimicing the human eye
By editing your videos you are mimicking the way we view the world.
According to Alex Burmester; Research Associate in Perception and Memory, New York University
As we look around our environment, we move our eyes. This enables us to orient the fovea toward what we’re most interested in within the vicinity. These voluntary eye movements are called saccades and are made about three times a second.
We don’t notice these eye movements but when you think about it, you always have a visual sense of what is around you. Right now as I type, I am looking at the screen but I’m also aware of my fingers typing, the view outside, the mug on my desk, the second and third screens staring at me.
Your audiences aren’t accustomed to sitting and staring at one thing. To keep it visually interesting, you need to edit your pre-recorded videos.
Are these the best vertical video editing apps?
If they’re not, tell me, I want to hear your recommendations.
Here are two vertical video editing apps for IGTV. Both work on iPhone and Android but I used an iPhone to shot the demos.

You can:

eZy Watermark (Video)
Not an editing tool but a quick way to add a logo to your vertical videos. It’s available for iPhone and Android.
https://www.facebook.com/spiderworking/videos/10156449300289618/
You can:
- Add photos as an overlay to your videos
- Create a signature to add to your videos as a watermark
- Save your watermarks so you can quickly add them each time

Animatron Wave
This is a web-based editing tool. You can start from scratch or use a template for your video. You can create your video in different formats (horizontal, vertical, square) all at the same time.
iMovie for iPhone
When you edit a vertical video on iMovie for iOS it remains on a full 16 x 9 canvas. As long as the vertical video sits in the middle of the canvas only the vertical part will display when uploaded to IGTV.
CyberLink PowerDirector for Android
Probably the best mobile editing app I’ve used, comes with built in 9 x 16 vertical video editing.
What tools would you recommend?
That’s my top vertical video editing tools for IGTV. I want to expand this list. What vertical video apps and tools do you use? I’d love to hear about them, leave me a comment with your recommendations or shoot over to YouTube and leave your comment there.
