Better websites
Is your website a virtual white van?

When I was a child my Dad used to read cereal boxes at the breakfast table. I’m not sure why. Maybe it was his way of switching off, maybe he wanted some head space. Whatever the reason it seems to be a habit I’ve picked up. It’s not always cereal boxes, it can be whatever you put in front of me.

Last week the object in front of me was a van. I was stuck in traffic, it was raining, the only interesting thing to look at was the back of the van in front of me in the queue.

As I looked and read I realised that the back of the van represented something. It looked a really awful website.

Creating Better Websites

To find out why and what you can do to make sure you don’t make the same mistakes as van man watch below.

Is Your Website An Online White Van?

Here are the first three questions you need to ask yourself about your website:

  1. Is it too cluttered?
  2. Does each page have a purpose?
  3. Is it obvious to visitors what they should do next?

Finally, perhaps it’s time to find a website Buddy (thanks Laura Lucus for that term). Get a friend or family member to sit down and navigate your website. Watch them but don’t interrupt. Not only will they point out any broken links or usability problems but you will begin to understand how people really use your website.

Here are some more things to consider when you are considering a web re-design.

Your Turn

When is the last time you reviewed your website? Have you asked a friend to review your site for you? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below.
