“I’ve no interest in using Facebook for myself but I’ve heard it’s good for business”
Those are the words of many business owners that have come to me for Facebook marketing advice. I think this is a big mistake. Find out why below:

If you really want to become good at something you have to learn from others. I’m not talking about taking courses or even listening to me or watching my videos. I’m talking about others that may not be in your niche, people who are doing good stuff, writing good stuff, being great at Facebook.
There’s a Facebook group I’m in that is pretty unique as it lets users share their blog posts. There are a lot of debates in there about whether this should be allowed and I’m always fighting to keep it the way it is. Why? Because within that group I read lots of blogs I wouldn’t find elsewhere. I learn things from people, I discover the stories that keep me wanting to read more and the ones that make me switch off.
From reading these posts, not related to my business or industry I’m learning more about telling stories and blogging than any course or expert can tell me.
The same goes for Facebook marketing. I use Facebook as it was intended, I communicate with my friends, get involved in discussions and post my own content. On my personal profile page, you’ll rarely find me talking digital marketing and I keep it closed to just people I know for that reason. I do this both so I can keep my friends (I know they’d be bored to tears with my social media news) and to experience Facebook the way the majority of the population does.
The two things may not seem linked but to me they are. It’s only as a reader and consumer I can learn how to use social media and digital marketing better.
As small business owners, we need to take our blinkers off and try and view the world from another perspective.
Try:
- Reading at least one blog post a week from someone you’d never normally look at
- Find a newspaper or publication that contradicts your world view and read an article from it
- Follow a page on Facebook from a business you don’t’ frequent
I guarantee you’ll learn a whole bunch of stuff from this experience. If you do try let me know how you get on.
