Anyone who has heard me banging on about my love of Instagram will have heard me say that one of the reasons I’m so fond of it is that it captures a moment in time, snapshots of the people’s lives that I follow.
When Irish boxer Katie Taylor fought her last fight in the Olympics Ireland stood still and when I looked back at Instagram I was struck by all the photographs of people in various places watching it.
This weeks cool tool takes that concept one step further showing us what is happening in the world or one of a few specific cities (no Dublin yet) right now.
Here’s how it works:
Visit the This Is Now website
Choose to see what is happening in a city or choose to see what is happening around the world. I chose London because that’s where I am at the moment.
Depending where you are and what time of day you look the stream will start filling up and moving as people add new geo-tagged photos to their streams.
I love that I am currently near the houses of parliment and shots of the houses of parliment have started filtering into my stream. It makes me somehow feel less alone in a big city. It also wants me to go and take a few shots myself and see how quickly they appear.
It’s also a great way to meet new people or follow new interesting Instagrammers who live in your city. If you click on an image it brings you to the Instagram photo page for the image and if you log in you can leave a comment or like it.
It may just be a fluffy bit of fun but it’s a lovely app and a great way of connecting people, definitely one to watch. It could definitely benefit from adding Dublin to the map though!
