Go Live From Facebook Portal

Imagine going live to Facebook without having to fiddle around with your phone or your computer. Imagine having a permanent device set up that you could just click a button and bam your live on your page or in your group.

An update to Facebook’s smart video calling device Portal will enable you to do just that. It makes Portal a must have office accessory.

As well as going live.  you’ll also be able to join messenger rooms and change your backgrounds just like Zoom.

Having a standalone video call device has advantages. It’s more portable than a computer and more stable than a phone.

New Ways to Connect With Friends and Family on Portal

Instagram is a growing news channel

If you asked anyone they’d probably tell you that Twitter is the social network for realtime news. But not anymore, a study shows that Instagram is catching up.

In fact, according to a study:

  • Use of Instagram for news has doubled since 2018.
  • Almost a quarter of 18-24 year olds in the UK got their Coronavirus updates via Instagram.
  • Interestingly 56% of people trusted government and news organisations more than social media.

If covering news stories is part of your digital marketing strategy then you need to start looking at Instagram. I might even repurpose this live show there.

People are buying Groceries via Pinterest

It doesn’t seem to matter what you sell online, you need to be on Pinterest.

This week Pinterest released data to show a spike in Pinterest users buying their grocery shop via the network.

There was a 70% rise in March 2020 compared to the previous month. Of course, this is because more people are shopping online during lockdown.

Pinners also spend more money than non-Pinterest shoppers. Don’t put it off any longer if you are an online retailer.

A new way to verify on Twitter

Last week we talked about the return of Twitter verification which could be one way for your business to prove it’s legitimacy. But this week it looks like the new Twitter verification will just require you to submit government ID. This will completely change the meaning of verification.

Yes, you’re a real person but it doesn’t make you a legitimate source or business. Perhaps there will be a different process for business accounts..

Could this lead to two-tier verification? You’ll have people  who have the original blue tick and those who just verified their identity.

Parenting groups on Facebook get new features

Facebook are making changes to Parenting groups on Facebook, making them a more interactive and safe place to look for help and advice. They’re adding these three features:

  1. Anonymous posting. No one will judge your parenting because they don’t know who you are but you’ll be able to get the advice you require.
  2. Badges. Parenting is different at every stage. You’ll be able to choose a badge in the group to represent your level of parenting. From considering parenting up.
  3. Expanded mentoring. So you can get one to one help.

All of this actually does help build a community. According to Margaret Atwood a community is built around a common cause. In this case could that cause be becoming better parents?

I’m hoping we’ll see features like this appear in other groups helping them find their shared purpose.

Twitter wants you to follow new lists

Creating lists on Twitter is time consuming but so useful.

They sat dormant for many years but now Twitter wants us to embrace them.

Lists are created by users. They are lists of Twitter users, when aded to the list you can segment your feed to just see Tweets from those users.

Recently Facebook added a function to swipe left and right to view lists, now they are making it easier to find lists from other users to follow and pin.

Twitter is testing a new list discovery tool that will help you find lists to follow. You’ll be able to add them to your pinned lists for easy access.

Following lists from other people on Twitter could help you burst out of your bubble and find new people to connect with.

Snapchat virtual graffiti

Snapchat has found a new way for you to interact with people in your local area.

AR local environments will include local places that you can interact with through Snapchat. This will include ‘editing’ buildings and spray painting. Whatever you create will remain for other local users to view or add to.

This shows a real push to build a stronger connection between Snappers and people in the real world.

They’re also adding some search features that will help you identify plants and dog breeds from a snap.
