How to find out what people are saying about you using Google Reader

This is part 3 of our series on Google Reader – a truely wonderful social media tool.  This time we look at how you can monitor mentions of your brand, business, or industry online.

Knowing what other people are saying about you and your industry is massively important.  You can identify problems, measure how far your message is spreading and find inspiration for blog and social media content from industry trends.

Bringing all these mentions into one place makes it easy to scan through results for relevant stuff and this is one of the reasons Google Reader is such a good tool for monitoring for free.  We show you Advanced Twitter Search and Social Mention in our tutorial but for a full list of the best free social media monitoring tools click here.

In part one we showed you how to set up and how to bring your favorite blog feeds into Google Reader

In part two we showed you how to bring Google alerts into your Googler Reader

Google Reader – An Indispensable Social Media Tool Pt.2 – Adding Google Alerts

Last week in part 1 we showed you how to set up Google reader, how to import blog feeds and how to add them to folders.
This week we show you how you can easily import Google Alerts to your Reader.  Google alerts are a fantastic tool for monitoring mentions of you, your brand/business name and industry trends.  However they can end up clogging up your inbox if you send them to your email account.  Bringing them into Google Reader makes them far easier to scan through allowing you to quickly find the important information.

How to run competitions on your blog

One of the questions I am asked most frequently is how to run a contest on Facebook without breaking their promotional guidelines and without having to spend money using an application like promotions.

In this weeks videocast I show you how to add a simple form to your blog to collect competition entries using Google Docs. If you don’t have a website or blog you can also send people directly to your Google Docs form to collect entries.  It’s simple and free so give it a go.

Other easy to use forms ae JotForm and FormStack these both cost but are incredibly easy to use and have more integrated embed options.

If you do set up a competition using this method let us know about it by leaving a comment below.  Also let us know if you get stuck trying to put it together, I’d be happy to help you.

How to auto post YouTube videos to Facebook using RSS Graffiti

We’ve talked about how to automatically feed your blog to your Facebook page before but recently we have had a number of enquiries from people who want to feed their YouTube channel to their page.

We did some research and also asked Quora the much hyped Q&A social network for a solution and the top suggestion was RSS Graffiti.

If you are having problems locating your RSS feed on YouTube you can edit the following link, replacing ‘spiderworking’ with your YouTube user name:

http://gdata.youtube.com/feeds/base/users/spiderworking/uploads

There is a disadvantage with using applications to automate what you post to Facebook.  If Facebook detects a number of posts coming from the same feed it aggregates them and hides them (see below).  It’s definitely worth baring this in mind before relying on applications to post all your updates to Facebook.

What applications do you love on Facebook?  Let us know in the comment box below.

If you are not using Google Alerts already check out our video on how to get started, we recommend using it in conjunction with a Gmail account as it makes it easy to sync it to your Google Reader.
