Is Social Media Right For Your Business? – SME Business Summit: Kilkenny

Many businesses dive into using social media without a thought, they learn as they go and some of these are hugely successful.  Others assume it’s not the right fit for their business so don’t bother looking.  On Tuesday I’ll be talking at the SME Business Summit in Kilkenny about how to decide if social media is right for your business and busting some common myths about social media.  Here’s a taster of what I’ll be talking about.

Where to start

Using social media as a marketing tool is in many ways the same as any kind of marketing, you need to identify your customer.  It’s no use trying to reach ‘everyone’ even if your target market is ‘everyone’ you need to segment it, define exactly each type of customer you have.  Once you have done this you can endeavour to find out if they use social media tools.

One sure fire way to know if potential customers are on social media is to see if your existing ones are, do they have Facebook pages? Twitter accounts? Linkedin profiles?  Next draw up a list of dream clients and see if they are using social media.  If the answer to any of these is yes list the networks are they using.  This should form your starting point, if your customers are there you should be there too.

Things we might not think of a social networks

When we talk about social media most people think of Facebook, some think of Twitter and others may look further.  However it’s not just these online websites that are social.  Social media reaches much further, essentially it is all interaction on the Internet, whether this happens on an online forum, a blog or through product reviews it is all social.  For those of you who know they’re customers are not on Facebook it’s worth looking at how else you can interact with them online.  Is it worth you setting up a forum on your website?  Can you mobilise a group of people and form your own community?  A great example of this in action is Design Spark from  RS components.  They have built a social network where engineers can share knowledge and learn, it gives them the opportunity to understand their market and sell key products on the back of it.

Monitoring

Are people talking about you online already?  This is one of the most compelling reasons to use social media.  It’s a common misconception that starting a Facebook page or a Twitter account leaves you open to complaints.  In reality if someone wants to complain about you they will, whether you are online or not.  If you have a presence you have the opportunity to manage your customer care in a transparent way.  Twitter is often used as a customer service tool.  I’ve found 02, and Asda very receptive, responding to just a mere mention of their names.

It’s important to know if people are talking about you. If you are a larger company it’s worth investing in a monitoring tool, here’s a list of paid monitoring tools & the costs involved [thanks to Black Dog New Media].  Smaller businesses are less likely to have people talking about them online so the free tools such as Google Alerts are adequate. Here’s a list of free monitoring tools.  As a small business it’s also important to monitor the internet for industry trends and competitors, this will keep you clued in and help you decide whether a social media presence is relevant to you.

For more on how to decide if social media is right for your business come along to the SME Summit on Tuesday (29th November 2011) and follow the hashtag #sebiz on the day.

Drive traffic to your blog and supe it up – KLCK in Kilkenny

I believe that blogging should be the hub of your social media campaign.  I’ve seen the results that blogs can bring both for driving traffic to your website and as establishing you as an expert in your field.  But it can be hard to get started and even the most proficient bloggers are always learning and growing.  It was for all of these reasons that earlier this year with the help of Lorna Sixsmith of Garendenny Lane Interiors I set up the KLCK (Kildare Laois Carlow Kilkenny) Bloggers network , with the aim of sharing knowledge and become better bloggers together.

Monday night was our first meeting in Kilkenny and we had two excellent speakers.  Marie Ennis O’Connor whose blog ‘Journeying Beyond Breast Cancer‘ attracts massive amounts of traffic talked about how to get more people to read our blogs.  There was something for everyone to learn from her presentation including me!  You can view here slides by clicking here.

Ken McGuire followed on the theme from last month covering some of his favorite WordPress Plugins, a great selection that would enhance any blog, most of which I will be adding to this blog soon.  You can view his presentation by clicking here.

If you would like to know more about the KLCK Bloggers Network ‘Like’ our Facebook page.  You can view the blogroll of attendees here.

The meeting this month was hosted by The Pembroke Hotel in Kilkenny  and we were blown away by the facilities a big thank you to everyone there for their hospitality.

The next meeting will be on the 8th of November somewhere in Kildare, speakers and venue TBC.

KLCK Bloggers Network Does Portlaoise!

Last week saw the third meeting of the KLCK Bloggers network and our first outing to Laois.  Once again it was well attended and although there were technical difficulties with the live stream to start with we got them fixed and 8 people joined us online.

I’m always bowled over by the atmosphere at our meetings, everyone has knowledge to share and questions to ask.  Everyone, newbie or experienced blogger can learn something.  I’d never heard of some of the plugins that our first speaker Eoin from Istech told us about but all were useful.  ’Old Post Spinner’ in particular provoked some debate.  Spinning blog posts means recycling old blog posts –  changing them slightly and re-posting them ‘Old Post Spinner’ automates this process.

Our second speaker Niall Devitt talked about Bloggertone, many of us were inspired to think about submitting content, he was also a wealth of information on blogging in general, and our questions kept him busy for quite a while.

If you want to view the stream recorded on the night click here (quality not great).  You can also download Eoin’s notes by clicking here.

Our next meeting is at The Pembroke Hotel, Kilkenny on 11th October 2010 at 7pm.  You can RSVP on Facebook or Linkedin or by leaving a comment on this post.

The Inaugural Meeting – KLCK Bloggers Network

P1000888

Monday saw the Inaugural meeting of the KLCK Bloggers Network, a group of like minded people living in the Kildare, Laois, Carlow, Kilkenny area who share an enthusiasm for Blogging and Internet marketing.

Amongst those who attended were those who write professionally, those with popular blogs, those who were just taking the first step in blogging and those who were on the cusp of getting started.

The aim of the group is to share knowledge, put our heads together and see what we can achieve both individually and as a group.

Meetings will continue every second Monday of the month and all are welcome to attend whether you are living in the four counties or not and whether you are already a blogger or not.

Our next meet up will be on August 9th at the Talbot Hotel Carlow. Paula Sheridan from Candle Designs will be talking about using Flickr for business and we will have a second presentation on the basics of setting up a WordPress blog and useful plugins (speaker tbc).  If you’d like to come along or if you have expertise to share with the group you can RSVP on Facebook or on Linkedin or by leaving a comment on this blog post.
